Kathy Belz

Kathy Belz is a native of Baltimore who has carried on a love affair with clay for more than 30 years. She works in high-fired stoneware, creating functional pottery for everyday use in the home and in the garden. Her work is both thrown on the wheel and hand-built from clay slabs.
"Working in clay is endlessly fascinating. After all these years, I still can't wait to get into the studio, and get excited about a new glaze or decorating technique I've not yet tried, or a new form I want to explore. There's always something new to learn.
In a world of mass-produced objects and instant gratification, there is something grounding and intentional about making objects by hand. It gives me joy to know that people incorporate my pottery into their daily lives — a favorite mug for their morning coffee, a special serving platter for family dinners and celebrations. I like to think it enhances the enjoyment of preparing and serving food when you know that the artist's hand was involved in creating a one-of-a-kind piece."
